The Future of Short Film

Kate Taylor and Ben Blaine weigh in

DepicT! was at Rushes Soho Short Film Festival which took place last week in London at the Curzon Soho and other venues. In addition to lots of great short films (some of which are streaming on Babelgum, a new internet-based TV service), the Future of Short Film panel on Wednesday at the Apple Store on Regent Street stood out as quite an interesting presentation on the traditional sales and aquisitions and commission opportunities, as well as newer opportunities for getting films seen via the internet.

On the panel was Halloween/London Short Film Festival co-director Kate Taylor, who read out her manifesto (of sorts) on where she thinks short film is headed. Fellow panelist and filmmaker/Shooting People Film Programmer Ben Blaine has extended this conversation through Ben's blog on Shooting People, where he's posted her original thoughts on the current state and future of short film and then followed up with his own. These posts, as well as the comments posted afterward, raise a number of pertinent questions about how costs, funding and modes of distribution for short film might be changing, for better or worse...

Also, Charlie Brooks from FourDocs had a few things to say on the subject.
