As the competition deadline for DepicT! ’10 looms ever closer (the magic date is Mon 6 Sept, folks!), we are delighted to announce the stellar judging panel for this year’s competition. The industry professionals and filmmakers who will be pouring over a shortlist from hundreds of entries include:
The panel will have the difficult task of choosing winners for the main DepicT! prize of £1500 and the British Special Mention Award of tailored industry support.
They’ll be looking out for filmmakers whose shorts are distinctive, imaginative and engaging – if you want to be in with a chance of winning submit your super-short of 90s or less before the deadline and they might just be handing out a prize to you at the Encounters International Film Festival awards ceremony in November.
Speaking of Encounters – Mark Cosgrove, its Creative Director, wrote a piece recently about what he looks for in a good short film and the importance of festivals for emerging filmmakers. Check it out on the Civic Life blog and take some notes!
More good advice can be found in the form of filmmaker Sam Firth. Sam won the British Special Mention Award for her film I.D. in DepicT! ’09, receiving a special package of support from BAFTA, the British Council and the National Film and Television School as part of her prize. She kindly took the time to sit down with us and talk about the huge amount of activity she’s been up to as a result of her DepicT! win in our special interview.
Watch out for Sam’s film and the other DepicT! ’09 winners (A TV Movie and Last Minute) at a local independent cinema near you in August – they’ll be coming to Watershed, Manchester’s Cornerhouse, Glasgow’s GFT and London’s Curzon chain. Can’t make it over? 2009’s shortlist is all available to view online right now!
